Time to dig in—but which fork should they be using?
The Summer Search Career Advisory Network: Helping Alumni Reach for Their Professional Dreams
by Yasmin Pereyra, Boston Alumni Board CAN Committee Chair, Brighton High ’99, Smith College ‘03
SSYP, CAN, & PI…”What are these acronyms?” you may ask. Well, if you don’t know, let me take this time to inform you of the lingo that many cool Summer Searchers are learning and using as resources. Allow me to start off by saying that as Summer Search alumni and young professionals, you are considered to be a Summer Search Young Professional (SSYP). Additionally as you further discover your career options, you can explore all the different ways the Career Advisory Network (CAN) will assist you, such as by using the Predictive Index (PI), which is a tool that can provide insights into your unique, individual work style.
“And why is all this important???” you must be asking!
Well, as we all head (or remain) in an increasingly competitive workforce, we need to acquire skills that specific to our career paths, but more importantly, we should also attain skills that have the facet of being inter-career domain adaptable. One excellent way of acquiring these kinds of 21st-century skills is by operationalizing, putting into practice all the theories and concepts that many of us learned while sitting (half asleep) in our 8 a.m. college classes. And now you must be asking, what’s the best way of doing that and making $$$ at the same time if I’m still in college? The answer is via an internship! The great thing is that as the cool Summer Searchers that we are, we have the vast resource of all the networks that are affiliated with the Summer Search Boston office. So if you are interested in making money and learning more about prospective careers, you should then familiarize yourself with all the internships that are available this summer through Summer Search Boston in industries such as financing, banking, law, media, and health.
The great thing is that our available resources don’t stop there! Through CAN, professionals can review our resumes, we can practice informational interviewing and we also have the ability to be matched up with a career mentor in our fields of interest. In due course, all of these CAN opportunities allow us to learn more about who we are, what we like (and dislike) within the various jobs that we eventually would like to pursue and ultimately become successful SSYPs!
