Position Summary

Summer Search is currently seeking a dynamic, people-focused, and results-oriented HR professional to serve as its Director of HR and Talent Management. The Director will build and implement an effective and sustainable talent function for the organization and will have the primary responsibility for developing and managing Summer Search’s strategy to attract, retain, develop and promote high performing staff at all levels of the organization.  The Director of HR and Talent Management will focus efforts on aligning talent systems and HR best practices with the organization’s strategic goals.  The role will serve to optimize the quality and effectiveness of Summer Search’s staff capacity in order to continue to provide high-quality services to the youth Summer Search serves as the organization moves to our next phase of growth.

This position reports directly to the Vice President of Operations and will collaborate closely with other senior leaders to design systems that integrate talent initiatives with strategic initiatives of the organization.

Primary Responsibilities

HR Oversight

Oversee and ensure prudent application of HR practices consistent with current federal/state legislation and regulations via management of Human Resources Coordinator. Oversee and ensure quality of services provided by outsourced human resource provider responsible for maintaining compliance and legal protocols.

Hiring Systems

Create streamlined hiring systems that support the hiring needs of the local and national offices that include: behavioral interview guides and rubrics for all positions, updated and consistent competency based job descriptions, and onboarding templates.

Development Pathways

Design and implement clear career ladder/lattice structures with a focus on developing and retaining high-performing staff. Help build increased clarity and transparency around salary bands, markers for success in each position, and promotion philosophies/policies.

Staff Development

Improve current use of annual reviews in Success Factors such that performance management and staff development goals are tracked and reviewed systematically throughout the year. Oversee implementation of annual talent reviews. Help move the organization to a systematic talent-management culture, where smart investments in individual staff development improve staff retention, and efficiency and effectiveness of work.

Manager Training Curriculum and Support

Develop a curriculum to ensure that Summer Search managers have essential knowledge and skills to effectively oversee and grow their teams. Serve as a resource to supervisors in addressing performance challenges and other management issues.

Recruiting

Identify opportunities and support the work of improving staff diversity. Assist local sites on individualized recruitment strategies. Help create an Employee Value Proposition, used to differentiate the opportunity of becoming a Summer Search staff member.

Data Analysis

Collect and use data to inform all talent-management strategies, with an eye on balancing staff satisfaction with maximum return on investment. Support managers in using data to inform local personnel needs.

Other duties as needed and assigned.

Candidate Qualities

Leadership         

  • An individual whose understanding of and passion for the Summer Search mission engenders the confidence of staff and board members, and informs his or her decision-making.
  • A strategic thinker who anticipates needs, recognizes unexplored opportunities, and brings creativity to problem solving. 
  • One who combines executive presence with warmth, empathy, and a sensitivity to the needs and motivations of others.
  • A manager who is comfortable delegating to a staff of highly skilled professionals and engaged volunteers while nonetheless staying abreast of important matters and retaining ultimate accountability.

Experience

  • At least 5 years of HR Management or Director-level experience with focus on Performance Management, Recruitment, Training and Development and Organizational Development.
  • Background creating and executing talent systems in a growing organization.
  • A history of working effectively within a mission-driven organization with a strong culture and passionate staff and board members.
  • B.A. required with Masters in a related field a plus. PHR/SPHR Certification strongly preferred.

Skills and Knowledge

  • Fluency with talent management metrics such as turnover rates, recruiting statistics, and employee engagement scores.
  • Proficiency in Human Resource practices and policies.
  • An ability to both create and implement systems.
  • Gifted at building relationships with a wide range of people, including staff members, board members, and external stakeholders. 
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills that allow one to speak and write compellingly to create understand and buy-in new initiatives.
  • Adept at transforming an organization’s approach to talent management in a manner that displays and integrates respect for its mission, culture, and history. 
  • The ability to prioritize local site needs in a way that is customer-centric but aligns with national goals.
  • A working knowledge of technology and its applications in the field of human resources; proficiency with Success Factors database a plus.

LOCATION AND TRAVEL

We are headquartered in San Francisco. Occasional travel to all sites may be required.
